In my first year UX/UI course, I was assigned to create a local apple farm app under the name Pippin Orchards.
I was tasked to create paper wireframes, grey scale mockups, and finally high-fidelity prototypes utilizing Adobe XD.
Things that needed to be included were, a landing screen, home screen, what apples were available and their picking/harvesting seasons,
which apples could be used for certain uses, and apple descriptions.
I created the logo in Illustrator and used Pixabay and Unsplash for images.
Some feedback I received at the time was that many of my headers appeared as clickable buttons, the font wasn’t the most readable,
and constant use of outlines created a harder to read look.
I enjoyed the design and creation process as it was my first time designing an app, not to mention
using software to see the prototype operate. Looking back at my app, I know that my knowledge has grown in the past 2 years,
and tasked myself with recreating the app with my new design skills and knowledge of UX/UI design.
- • I recreated the most important screens of the home and apple description screens, and
changed my old apple type and apple uses screens to combine into a single search screen. These were created using Figma.
The colour palette was fixed to have warmer and gentler tones of green, red, and cream to not overwhelm users.
The font was also toned down from sharp dark green or black to a warm, deep brown with a more readable typeface.
- • The new home screen features what apples are currently in season, images of the apples from the farm, and a popular recipes tab.
I also added a new aspect of U-Pick apples if customers are interested in going to the farm and picking their apples themselves.
- • The search screen is utilized for searching what apples are grown on the farm, and what apples are best suited for certain recipes.
I’ve also added Baking, Drinks, and Apples as constant filtering tabs as they could be the most searched keywords.
- • Once a user finds an apple they want, it will bring them to the apple's description which includes a graphic of the apple,
the picking season, the taste, description, and recommended recipes for that specific apple.
I found this redesign particularly satisfying, as it showcased my growth in both UI and UX design principles.
